The AYLUS San Diego Branch students worked from 8AM to 6PM on July 31, 2016 and successfully installed six bat boxes for the City of Santee, in the Santee Town Center Community Park. They learned how to stain poles and bat boxes to keep them weather resistant. They also learned how to dig three feet deep holes, how to mix and pour concrete, and how to keep the bat box poles straight by using levels. The students also installed the bat boxes facing southwest so that at 10AM in the winter, the bat boxes will be shined by the sun.
Even though it was tough to drill holes in the lumber (the kids ran out of two batteries for electric drills), dig the three feet holes in the ground with many stones, and find water to mix the concrete even tough there was no water source, the students overcame all difficulties and were successful at the end.
With their hard work, the City of Santee now has new bat boxes which help the city to keep bats in bat boxes and farms, and away from school gyms, warehouses, and private property. The San Diego Branch students are satisfied that with their dedication and hard work have been beneficial and useful to the City of Santee.
By rewarding the students dedication and success, the City of Santee has granted the San Diego Branch of AYLUS to also design, build, and install two chamber bat boxes in the near future.
