On Saturday, October 10th, members of the Great Neck AYLUS branch hosted an AAPI event for kids at the Great Neck Main Library from 3:45 to 5:00 PM. The activities that were held included story reading plus arts & crafts, with crochet, in addition to pipe cleaner and paper pumpkin making offered to the kids. To start out the event, Nathan Li, Alex Li, and Goldman Tian read three story books to the children. These books included “Birthday Soup” by Grace Seo Chang, “She Sang for India: How M. S. Subbulakshimi Used Her Voice for Change” by Suma Subramaniam, and “Hi! Fly Guy” by Tedd Arnold.
After reading, volunteers Isabelle Yang, Nathan Li, Goldman Tian, and Andrew Li helped kids make pipe cleaner pumpkins. Volunteers Jolynn Li and Christina Pan taught the making of paper pumpkins at the same time. Finally, Rainie Cheng and Victoria Xu showed kids the basics of crocheting.
After the event, the library saw the pipe cleaner pumpkin rings the volunteers had made and requested some more to be donated for events. Volunteers Rainie Cheng, Victoria Xu, Nathan Li and Isabelle Yang stayed after for another half hour to make more pumpkin rings.
Overall, the session was rich in knowledge and creativity for the kids, while remaining fun and enjoyable. We thank anyone who came and look forward to our next event!
