On October 4, 2026, the AYLUS Roslyn branch volunteered as teacher assistants at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to help support classroom activities and assist teachers.
During the first part of the shift, we followed our usual responsibilities for greeting students, helping the settle in, distributing worksheets, guiding them during breaks, and assisting teachers with day-to-day classroom management to keep things running smoothly. In addition, we helped students answer questions and take them to the bathroom before buying snacks with the coupons they receive from the teachers. By helping out and doing these responsibilities it reduces the amount of work the teacher needs to do, so they can concentrate on teaching and keeping the students engaged instead.
Today during the 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. was the first day of cultural classes. The students did arts and crafts learning how to use scissors and glue. They specifically cut out pieces of paper making a popcorn bucket and used other thin sheets of paper to make the popcorn.
Overall, volunteering as teacher assistants continues to provide us with valuable hands-on experience, strengthening our sense of responsibility, patience, and teamwork while helping the teachers create a welcoming environment for the students.
