On Saturday, June 6, 2026, AYLUS Oakland Gardens held their 230th event at The Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Grounds. This event took place from 8:45 am to 12:15 pm. AYLUS Oakland Gardens worked with Muareen Regan and Ada Mata to help the overgrown weeds near the flower beds in the burial ground.
We started the event off by separating our members into groups to cover more ground. Each group was first tasked with removing the vines that had started to intertwine themselves around the fences around the flower beds. The vines covered up the view of the flower beds. Members had to work together to unwind the vines from the fences. They also had to use shovels and trowels to remove the weeds and unwanted plants that started to grow between the fence and the walking path. This, in turn, made the paths and fences look cleaner and well-kept. Thus, making the people who visit the burial ground feel more cared for and noticed. This reminds people that the history behind the burial ground is not forgotten or abandoned.
As more groups started to finish up removing the vines from the fence, Muareen tasked the finished groups to go into the flower beds to remove weeds like Mugwort and Mulberries. Those were the plants that made the gardens look overgrown. Those plants were blocking the sunlight and taking away nutrients from the plants that were planted in the gardens. This time, some members were inside the garden taking out weeds, and the other members were outside the gardens cleaning up the pulled weeds and cleaning up the walking paths. There were also some members tasked with raking up the cut grass from the lawns and paths within the burial group. At the end of the event, we ended up filling 22 bags with unwanted weeds.
Our members worked as a team to help make the work run more smoothly. Members had to communicate with each other to get across what they were going to do and what weeds needed to be pulled. Sometimes it was hard to determine which plants were weeds and which were the plants that should be left alone. So we would have to ask Maureen or Ada to confirm which plants were safe to pull out and remove. Our goal was to make the flower beds look more polished and clean. This event wasn’t just about the look of the garden. It was also to bring more joy to people when they got to visit the burial ground.
We want to thank Congresswoman Grace Meng for coming to visit the Flushing Burial Ground and sharing the history behind this historic site. We want to thank Maureen Regan and Ada Mata for always giving to opportunity to do these events and teach our members about different plants. Lastly, we want to thank all the members who came to the event despite the heat and worked together to help better our community.
