On March 22nd, between 1:30 and 5:00 pm, members of the Roslyn Aylus Branch volunteered at Long Island (CCALI) at LIU. Members were required to sign in and out during this time. All members were placed into classrooms as TAs to aid the teacher during class time. Classrooms had multiple volunteers, depending on the classroom’s size, to better accommodate the class. Volunteers were used to hand out worksheets, manage the classroom, help students when needed, and help with any other tasks the teacher asked to be done.
At the beginning of class time, we welcomed and signed in all students who showed up. Afterwards, we handed out worksheets to all students and helped them if our assistance was needed. We also aided students whom the teacher thought required extra guidance. Throughout the day, TAs brought students to the bathroom or front desks for their snack time. Once class ended, we brought the students to their respective culture classes. Then we went to our own classes to observe and help students in learning or preventing accidents.
This experience was a memorable one because it allowed students to focus more while having the teacher’s workload lessened. The TAs, though given small tasks, were a major help to the teachers when they had excess work to deal with or other problems to sort out. We TAs made good social bonding experiences with the students to better communicate with them. Lastly, even though handling the work all day was exhausting, it taught us to be caring and to become more mature.
