On Saturday August 8th, AYLUS Syosset paired with volunteers of the Roslyn branch to visit the Levittown cerebral palsy residency. Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders caused by abnormal brain development, affecting movement, muscle tone and coordination. Fortunately, dozens of centers across Long Island are available to aid residents through their journey.
While fun, engaging activities are important and stimulating, sometimes simple conversation is enough to bring residents joy and help them feel connected. Volunteers made every activity as interactive as possible, regardless of residents’ coordination abilities. We began with arts and crafts, including painting, mosaic coasters, and coloring sheets. For the remainder of the day, volunteers made homemade rice-krispy treats and played bingo with everyone.
