AYLUS Oyster Bay took part in Stewardship Saturday at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) in Brentwood, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The volunteer work focused on greenhouse preparation and native plant propagation, supporting LINPI’s mission of restoring native ecosystems across Long Island.

During the session, members filled planting trays with soil and carefully planted native species such as little bluestem and cardinal flower, both of which play important roles in supporting local biodiversity and pollinators.

After planting, the trays were placed in the greenhouse and covered with snow, which gradually melted into water under the warm greenhouse temperatures, providing moisture for seed germination.

Through this experience, AYLUS members gained a deeper understanding of the early stages of native plant cultivation and the long-term process of ecological restoration (most seeds were collected in 2024). The event highlighted how small, consistent efforts in greenhouse work can contribute to larger environmental conservation goals and sustainable habitat development.
