On September 28th, 2025, the Roslyn AYLUS volunteers assisted at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The volunteers’ roles were to be teaching assistants, aiding both teachers and students in various activities and tasks.
Our jobs as TAs included helping the teachers and making the students feel comfortable as we eased into the new year. Firstly, we started the afternoon by greeting the children and helping them get set up for class. We then assisted teachers by printing out assignments for later, collecting homework, and taking kids to the restroom. TAs also helped children who may have been struggling, as well as calming down those who were distressed. Teachers were therefore able to continue class seamlessly without having to worry about any of them falling behind.
Today marked the first day of CCALI’s culture classes. These culture classes included activities such as yoga, art, dance, Chinese yo-yo, calligraphy, and more. TAs guided students to their designated courses, allowing a smooth transition from class to class. Finally, TAs helped make the pick-up process much easier by assisting students in packing up their belongings and ensuring they were brought to the right parent or guardian.
Overall, being a TA gave us insight into the responsibilities teachers handle every day. While the tasks we were given were simplistic, they helped relieve some of the stress on the teachers. Volunteering at the school also taught us patience and compassion for young children, enabling us to help create a welcoming and engaging environment that students enjoyed being part of.
