AYLUS Dix Hills Continue their work at Planting Fields State Park

On July 19th, AYLUS volunteers gathered at Planting Fields Arboretum to help with the restoration of a field. Around 20 volunteers were first lectured on the dangers of invasive plants, afterwards they were supplied with gloves and shovels. The task at hand was weeding a small patch of mulch around a Rhododendron. This plant was donated by local florists, and was planned to be showcased to a tour group later in the day. AYLUS volunteers were split into two groups, and a college intern accompanied each one to teach and identify plants. Lauren, Dix Hill’s intern, came from Texas A&M where she’ll be helping out at the Arboretum.

For three hours volunteers pulled out English Ivy, an invasive ivy that covered the ground and stole precious resources the local plants needed. The ivy was pulled by hand, and placed into different plant bins for disposal. Thanks to the help of AYLUS volunteers, the Planting Fields Arboretum became a more beautiful and welcoming place to visitors. The AYLUS community was happy to help college interns in their work and studies.
