Newtown AYLUS Volunteers Harvest and Prepare Onions at Rolling Harvest Gravity Hill Farm

On 7/19/25, members of the Newtown AYLUS branch volunteered at Rolling Harvest’s Gravity Hill Farm to support food-insecure communities by helping with onion harvesting and preparation. The event was part of our ongoing collaboration with Rolling Harvest, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing food waste and hunger by distributing farm-fresh produce to local food pantries and shelters.

During this event, volunteers worked in the fields to dig up mature onions, carefully collecting and cleaning them to prevent damage. After harvesting, we brought the onions to a shaded workspace where we cut off the stems and peeled the outer layers to prepare them for immediate donation and distribution. This hands-on process gave us insight into the hard work that goes into food production and distribution, and the importance of fresh produce in combating food insecurity.

The event was both physically demanding and incredibly rewarding. By the end of the day, we had processed hundreds of onions that will soon be in the hands of families in need. We are proud to support Rolling Harvest’s mission and look forward to continuing our partnership in future events.

Volunteers: Eric Chen (Leader), David Soong, Zhiheng Wang, Kylee Guo, Melinda He, Anna Fang, and Zhenyi Zhang. Each volunteer participated for 2 hours.
