May 10th 2025 afternoon, members of the AYLUS Morris Branch participated in a meaningful community service effort by contributing to the Diaper Drive organized by the Chatham Library. With the price of diapers having increased nearly 50% since 2020, many families are struggling to afford this basic necessity. In fact, a typical family can spend up to $1,000 per year on diapers alone—a cost that places significant strain on low-income households. Inspired by this growing need, AYLUS members stepped up to make a difference.
In the weeks leading up to the drive, students organized a diaper collection effort among their peers, neighbors, and local supporters. Their goal was to support families in the community who are facing financial hardship, particularly those with infants and toddlers who require daily diaper changes. Through a combination of teamwork, outreach, and dedication, the Morris Branch successfully collected over 800 diapers of various sizes.
On May 10th, the donations were brought to the Chatham Library, where the drive was being hosted. AYLUS volunteers delivered the diapers in the afternoon and worked with library staff to ensure the donations were received and ready for distribution to families in need. The moment was a rewarding one for the student volunteers, who understood that their efforts would help reduce the burden on parents trying to provide basic care for their children.
This initiative reflects the core mission of AYLUS—to empower youth to lead with compassion and contribute positively to their communities. By supporting the Diaper Drive, the Morris Branch members not only addressed a critical but often overlooked need, they also demonstrated the power of youth-led service. Their contribution will have a direct and meaningful impact on the well-being of families throughout the area.
