On April 19th 2025 from 8:45 AM to 12:45 PM AYLUS Oakland Gardens held its 145th event at the Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground. During the event we partnered with Maureen, her husband Frank, park employees Ada, and Mattias, to maintain the gardens and square. The Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground is the resting place of over 1000 individuals from several epidemics in the mid nineteenth century. Through our efforts we hope to preserve the resting place of these people for future generations.
At the beginning of the event Maureen enlisted the help of a small team of Aylus members to move essential tools to the staging areas. We moved about five wire rakes, ten metal rakes, seven sets of plastic rakes, fifteen spades, fifteen square shoves, fifteen trowels, ten pitchforks, a small leaf blower, and four wheelbarrows. Then Maureen separated us into age groups of elementary, middle, and high school members. After our members were organized, Maureen picked out ten high schoolers to work on mulching. Then Maureen split the rest of the high school group, who were assigned to rake leaves from the garden bed closest to 46th avenue and the garden bed bordering 165th street. After assigning the high schooler’s task. Maureen assigned the middle school group to rake leaves from the garden bed bordering 164th street. The last group consisting of elementary school members were handed the trowels and assigned to dig up weeds surrounding the trees in the center of the burial ground. The group assigned to mulching, added mulch to fourteen trees near the entrance of the burial ground. Around the middle of the event Maureen gave us a short snack break. Maureen and her husband Frank, set up a table and served us some snacks such as some small pastries and jam. After the snack break, the group assigned to mulch finished and was resigned to collect loose sticks with a wheelbarrow. After the group assigned to the garden bed bordering 145th street finished, they moved to the garden bed bordering 46th avenue to help finish raking. After we were done with all areas and associated tasks, we ended up with 151 bags of leaves and other assorted debris.
When we were done we gathered round with Maureen, Frank, Ada, and Mattias for a group picture along with everyone that helped us clean up the Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Grounds during the event. We would like to thank Maureen and Frank for providing the delicious snacks during the break. We would also like to thank Ada and Mattias for their help and advice during the event. Lastly we would like to thank everyone who came to help during the event, and helping to maintain the grounds.
