Syosset AYLUS Members Participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s 10/20/24

On Sunday, October 20th the final Walk to End Alzheimer’s of the season was held. Syosset AYLUS members joined together at Belmont state park to participate and help set up this event. Alzheimer’s is a heart sickening disease that affects the lives of many Americans each year. It is a disease that affects the physical development and form of the brain which leads to memory loss, reduced cognitive function, and usually dementia. Alzheimer’s is also chronic meaning that once a patient is diagnosed, it is long term and cannot be recovered from.

The Alzhiemer’s association is a great way for the local community to get involved with fighting the disease. The nonprofit hosts many events ranging from awareness events, fundraising, and more. They also give the opportunity for people to join support groups or receive assistance for the ones in need.

Volunteers started arriving as early at 7:45 in the morning to help set up tents, booths, tables, and more. A large group helped with assembling flowers with various colors to plant them in what was called the Hope Garden. Guests were able to pick a flower according to their relationship with the disease and personalize it. Volunteers also helped manage the children’s station and the photobooth where different activities were set up. Adolescents had the opportunity to get their face painted, decorate pumpkins, color, and more. By the end of the event and participants finished their walk, volunteers cheered them on and distributed Alzheimer’s stickers for all.
