On 6/20/2026, Aylus volunteers went to Bayard Cutting Arboretum from 9:30am to 12:00am (2.5 hours).
Today, Aylus volunteers are working in the friendship garden to help remove invasive species, mainly goutweed. Goutweed (Aegopodium podagraria) is an aggressive, shade-tolerant perennial in the carrot family that has a widespreaded root system that can be hard to remove, which is similar to properties of the roots of mugwort. In addition, goutweed looks very similar to poison ivy, which also has the distinctive three-leaves feature. Therefore, volunteers have to be careful when pulling out or shoveling out goutweed even though they have protective gel on their arms.
Attending the state park event helps volunteers to have a better understanding of invasive species and the impact of them. Furthermore, it helps volunteers to identify poisonous plants like poison ivy.
