SMILE 4 Special Needs (#272): Volunteers Support LSA Summer SMILE Camp for Special Needs (#133) on June 3, 2026

On June 3, 2026, Pearland volunteers supported staff in facilitating a shopping and life-skills lesson for campers attending the 2026 LSA Summer Camp at the Special Needs Caring Center.

As part of the day’s activities, volunteers accompanied participants on a community-based shopping trip to a local Costco Wholesale Club. Through individualized guidance and encouragement, volunteers helped campers practice communication, budgeting, and basic math skills in a real-world setting. Participants selected and purchased food, vegetables, and fruit, which were later used to prepare their own lunch, reinforcing independent living skills and healthy decision-making.

In the afternoon, volunteers led a music and movement activity featuring the song “Jump into the Light.” By teaching and demonstrating dance movements, volunteers encouraged participants to engage in physical activity while developing coordination, confidence, focus, and social interaction skills.

The day’s activities provided valuable opportunities for participants to strengthen practical life skills, enhance independence, and enjoy meaningful social experiences in a supportive and inclusive environment.
