East Pittsburgh AYLUS Branch Helps Donate Rice To Poor Countries Around The World (12/27/23 – 01/28/24)(33 days)

Starting from winter break (Dec 27), we(East Pittsburgh Aylus) started to brainstorm ways to have a positive impact on the world. During our discussion, we came across a website called freerice.com. Essentially, freerice.com is an educational, non-profit website that donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations Food Programme(WFP) per correct answer, which operates in over 80 countries around the world. Additionally, freerice.com has a wide variety of questions ranging from math to English, to even science. We decided this would be a good way to kill some time over winter break, as well as help others all around the world. With each correct answer being worth 10 grains of rice, our goal was to donate 5000-6000 grains of rice per day, or in other words, 300-400 questions a day. This was a tough schedule to keep up, given that we had to balance this with school and extracurricular activities(we kept this up even after winter break). Although some days we would feel burned out or overwhelmed, in the end, our group amassed a hefty 205,350 grains of rice in 33 days. I believe we were able to improve the lives of many through this volunteer activity.
