Riverside County AYLUS Members Create Hummingbird Feeding Stations and Bird Feeders to Help the Wildlife on August 11th-15th, 2022 (1)

The month of August so far has been characterized by extreme drought and heat in many parts of the country. The heat as a consequence of climate change has affected not only humans but particularly wildlife as well. Many crops are dried up and water sources as well.
Hummingbirds and birds in general are particularly fragile in this heat.

The RCA group decided to create hummingbird feeders and bird feeding stations. By following instructions found on the internet the group got to work.

Empty water bottles were repurposed, a way to help the environment, and flower shapes were cut out of colorful craft foam. A hole was drilled into the water bottle caps, and straws were cut into the right length. Finally the bird feeding stations were assembled. A few hiccups along the way let a few of our members alter the initial design to make it more stable and secure.

Another member prepared bird feeders with bird seeds mixed into cooked up Gelatin. This mixture was then filled into forms and set to dry with a straw in it to make up a hole.

Before the feeders were hung instructions were given as to how often the nectar in the feeders should be changed to keep the feeders safe for the birds. The nectar was prepared and then added.

The feeders were then hung in the members’ backyards and distributed to family, friends and neighbors.

For every 2 hummingbird feeders and / or 4 bird feeders 1 hr was given with a maximum of 4 hrs.
