Greater Princeton AYLUS Continues In Person Education Help Program (62nd) in September 2021

In September, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) students continued their in person Education Help Program. Although schools are restarting, some middle school students are still looking for tutoring classes to improve their academic skills in classes like math, science, or reading. Because of this, GPA is holding tutoring opportunities in core subjects.

GPA members (9/23, 2 hrs) Karen Yang, Eliana Du, and Kevin Song: Today was our second writers’ workshop! First, Kevin made a video recapping what we did last week with memoirs. Then we talked about writing competitions and various changes we were going to make to the curriculum (more discussions/speaking based). We then wrote according to a prompt; we asked students to write a story/poem according to a poem. Afterwards, we split up into breakout rooms to discuss our writing past and present!

GPA member Annie Miao tutored her students in math (9/25, 2 hrs): This week, Annie gave her tutee a final review on surface area, and they then moved on to begin talking about the distribution property of multiplication. Her tutee learned how to distribute with one set and two sets of binomials.

GPA members Kevin Song (9/26, 3 hrs) and Karen Yang (9/26, 2 hrs) tutored their students in math: This week we began with a quadratic coefficient problem to remind students how to factor. We then discussed these problems and students shared how they did the problems too. We then decided to do more problems with students giving us numbers and teachers discussing whether or not these problems would be factorable, have solutions and what those solutions would be. We then gave students loads of practice. and used a new program called “Overleaf” to try out some coding and equations.  We’ll be having our next class next week!

GPA member Catherine (9/27) tutored her student in math: I tutored my student in math today from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. This week, we focused on Greatest Common Factors (GCF) and Least Common Multiples (LCM) again. We worked on GCF and LCM word problems. We worked on complex problems, where we had to put the GCF and LCM values into context and perform multiple steps to get to our final answers. I tutored another student in reading from 8:00 – 9:00 pm today. I read two picture books with them about camping and what animals eat. We then discussed their contents and illustrations.

GPA member Sophia Song tutored her student in Algebra II.

GPA member Yan Fischer tutored his student in math.

The program allows GPA members to provide reading, writing, speaking, communication, and more to their students across the country.
