Greater Memphis Branch Tutors English throughout June #1

Alexandra Jankov tutored Charlotte English during June.

On June 3rd-
Alexandra and Charlotte finished up their section of grammar tutoring, after studying many worksheets ranging from parts of speech such as adverbs, prepositions, figurative language, and sentence structure. They moved on to work on Charlotte’s speaking when reading and how to understand and analyze many passages, which she showed great progress. Charlotte was capable of instilling all her grammar and English knowledge into understanding reading passages. (1 hr)

On June 6th-
Alexandra and Charlotte worked on reading comprehension by the use of the ACT Booklet as a resource. Charlotte would read multiple paragraphs and be asked questions on the main idea, specific details, and character development. Throughout this time, Alexandra gave Charlotte argumentative essay prompts to write and then discuss in the next tutoring session. They would then read through the essay together and highlight what was good and what should be rewritten. (1 hr)

On June 10th and 13th-

Alexandra and Charlotte worked heavily throughout the ACT Booklet in the English and Reading sections. These lessons helped with testing all of the grammar skills that Charlotte had collected as well as applying all these skills in a test-like situation. Charlotte practiced how to eliminate answers and explain her decision on why an answer choice would be correct or incorrect. Alexandra and Charlotte began a routine of working on vocabulary and spelling for the first 15 minutes of their sessions. (2 hrs)

On June 17th and 20th,

Alexandra and Charlotte worked on advanced vocabulary: 10 words were given to Charlotte at the beginning of each session in order to test her spelling and vocabulary skills. Other advanced topics that they discussed and worked on in order to fix future essay issues were Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers as well as parallel structure throughout sentences. Alexandra found many helpful worksheets that were effective in helping Charlotte understand these grammar rules. (2 hrs)
