Greater Princeton AYLUS Hosts Workshop for Young Writers (9th) in May 2021

Does your middle schooler love to write? Do they want the opportunity to grow that passion and discuss their writing with qualified mentors? If so, Young Writers Workshop at the Greater Princeton branch of AYLUS (GPA) is the answer!

On May 26th for 2 hours, two writing enthusiasts, GPA members Eliana Du and Karen Yang, met virtually, and will continue doing so every Wednesday, with middle schoolers to write, explore, conference, and create. Class was online, through the software “Google Meets.”

This week was very thought provoking, since we discussed poetry. We began with a fun fact about the longest poem ever written (1.8 million words!) and a warm-up, giving them three prompts to choose from which all related to poetry. Then, after we introduced them to what poems can be about, we had them watch an educational TedEd video called, “What makes a poem… a poem?” Afterwards, we talked about rhythm and types of rhythm in poetry, debated whether songs are poems and vice versa, and poetic style. Finally, their task for this week was to write a poem in two groups using the words from the poems they’d compiled earlier during the lesson.

Our meetings are also insanely flexible; drop in whenever you want and attendance isn’t mandatory for every week. Some other events we have are talking with authors and writing competitions, so sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSek_4xbog5f0dlPocvBP3bgERQvnn_X0EXo5kcIbk1AL9VPUg/viewform?usp=sf_link
