AYLUS Puget Sound Progress With High School Algebra Class

On December 5, 2020, members of AYLUS Puget Sound held the first class of the 2020-2021 High School Algebra Course! The last class we held on March 6th, 2021 marks the approximate halfway point through our course. Currently, this is the longest project members of the Puget Sound Branch are working on, and it is scheduled to continue to the end of April/beginning of May.

Our High School Algebra Course is taught by Cecilia Sun, Sophie Xuan, and Sarah Xuan. The three instructors team up to teach algebra topics at the high school level (up to pre-calculus). In each class, we present a combination of concept explanations, formula proofs, and explanations for example questions. We also try to integrate common tricks in problem solving in our examples as well. Additionally, instructors prepare practice problem sets and solutions for the topics covered in class.

We have a steady 15-20 students who attend classes as well as students who attend selectively. As of the March 6th class, we have covered the topics of: introduction to algebra, linear equations, systems of equations, proportions and rates, functions, introduction to inequalities, quadratic, conic sections, exponentials and logarithms, basics of complex numbers, and arithmetic, geometric, and arithmetic-geometric series. We are continuing the second half of our course begins with the big topic of polynomials.
