Greater Princeton AYLUS Sports Committee Continues Chess Class for Kids (23rd) in January 2021

The Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) sports committee continued chess classes every Monday and Tuesday for beginners along with Chess Tournaments on the first Saturday every month starting in October 2020.

During class, the students went over the games played in the recent tournament with cash prizes. Analyzing the games and positions, the students learned where they went wrong. After class, there is always time to play games against each other to have the opportunity to practice the skills we have learned in class in a real game. Having learned a variety of skills, the students are improving their visualization, tactic, and position skills.

During class on Tuesday, we teach basic information needed to play a game of chess such as what we call the pieces, how they move, and how to set up a chessboard. We went over some tactical positions and reviewed forks and mainly focused on pins. After class, the students played games against each other via chess.com.

GPA will host the next Chess Tournament on February 6, 2020 from 2 to 3 pm EST.

Participants: Sarah Yan (1/4, 2 hrs; 1/5, 2 hrs), Erick Yan (1/4, 2 hrs; 1/5, 2 hrs).
