East Cobb Branch Cut Films for Face Shield at Marietta Maker Station V

On October 18th, 2020, the East Cobb Branch went to laser cut plastic for use in shield masks at Atlanta Beat COVID (ABC) from 1 pm to 4 pm. We first cut the remaining plastic from last week.

Since they had been sitting out for a week, they had unrolled meaning that they were flat on the bed of the laser cutter. This was good as the laser cutter works by focusing the laser on a point which is where the cut is. However, if the plastic bulges up, the laser becomes wider and weaker. The new sheets cut this week did bulge out more than last weeks though. As we are cutting more films, the roll we are cutting plastic sheets off is getting smaller and the sheets are more like a circle than a flat sheet. This presented a few problems as the plastic bulged enough to prevent the laser cutter from cutting through a few times. We solved this problem through using more magnets to flatten out the sheets. With our issues fixed, we cut around 100 films. Branch adviser helped to take the photos.
