Greater Princeton AYLUS Continued ABC Youth Chess Program (9th) in July 2020

Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) continued its ABC Chess program to help kids learn how to play chess by moving the program online.

GPA volunteer Sarah Yan was the Champion of 2017 NJ Open U1600, while Erick Yan was the Champion of 2016 Manhattan Open Mixed Doubles Team. They are teaching around 12 school-aged children how to play chess and various strategies used to win a game. Sarah and Erick taught various skills used to defeat one’s opponent in the complicated game of chess such as pins and forks. With the continuation of the online classes, we can help students who have the passion for learning chess, even during this hard time.

ABC Chess is continuing with online classes every Monday. Ranging from complicated mate in twos to different openings such as the Sicilian Dragon, teachers Sarah Yan and Erick Yan always enjoy teaching fun and challenging positions. After each teaching session, the students play games against each other and put their new skills to the test. Having taught a variety of skills, the students are always improving every class.

Participants: Sarah Yan (June 29; July 6, 13, 20 & 27,  2020, 1.5 hours each), Erick Yan (June 29; July 6, 13, 20 & 27,  2020, 1.5 hours each)
