Greater Princeton AYLUS Teamed up to Tutor Kids Reading and Writing (3rd) on July 7, 2020

On July 7, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids from West Windsor in the subjects of reading and writing. The 1.5-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing.

This week was about poetry, from Shakespeare to modern day poems. The kids began with a warm up writing sample by reading another excerpt from Anne’s Diary of a Young Girl and responded to a question and then responded to their classmates. Then, GPA members taught them a lesson with Google Slides, videos, readings and photos on different types of poetry including poems from Shakespeare, Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson and more! The kids got to read many of these poets’ poems and reflect with questions. Finally, Karen introduced their homework (writing their own poem and finding a fun fact about a poet of their choice) and received their feedback on the class. She also elaborated on the book talks they have to do. All in all, it was a very fun class!

Anthony F Yang (7/7) did 2 hours of Community Service through the preparation and class of tutoring third graders (Aimee Zhang, Mulan Yang, Nico Fischer, Dayna Li) reading and writing.
