Greater Princeton AYLUS Taking 2nd Action in Support of Recycling Plastic Bags in Mercer County on January 11, 2020

On January 11, 2020, the Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) leadership team visited Tulpehaking Nature Center of Mercer County Park Commission (157 Westcott Ave., Hamilton, NJ 08610, Tel: 609-888-3218).

It is an action for GPA students to put their influence on the local community following their last public speech to the West Windsor Council on October 15, 2019 in support of an ordinance proposed to ban or reduce the usage of plastic bags.

Recycling has become as common today as taking out the trash. But not all items can be recycled easily. Mercer County Park Commission’s Teacher Naturalist, Alexandria Kosowski (akosowski@mercercounty.org) and Watershed Ambassador, Samantha Pfeffer (ambassadorwma20@gmail.com), warmly welcomed the GPA team and introduced the details of recycling challenge that Mercer County is currently taking. Happily, GPA team will be collecting all of those ‘hard to recycle’ soft plastic items labeled ‘2’ or ‘4’ that would normally end up in the landfill.

GPA students will start to collect such soft plastic films into large plastic bags at homes, and have the accepted items (see flyer for the accepted item list) regularly delivered to the nature centers listed, or to any nearby shops, e.g. Target in Princeton, that accept such recycling items. The challenge is to help Mercer County save 500 lbs of plastic films from the landfill, and yes, we can do it!

Participants (2 hour for all): Fengqi Wen, Mingjie Liu, Andy Chi, and Cassie Tammy Wang.
