Greater Princeton AYLUS Helped out at Princeton Cornerstone Community Kitchen on March 20, 2019

Community Service Activities of Angelina Yingying Liu:

Wednesday, March 20th, 2019 (4:30-6:00 pm) was my first time helping out at Princeton Cornerstone Community Kitchen (PCCK), and already it proved to be an eye-opening experience. Though I started the evening feeling a little bit nervous, my feelings quickly disappeared with the helpful and considerate words of the volunteers there. Our job was to put together meals that included a main dish, two sides, bread, a beverage, and a dessert to serve to the guests one by one. The guests of Cornerstone Community Kitchen seemed like one big family—laughing, talking, eating together. In the corner, groups of kids drew on colored paper, played with toys, and flipped through picture books. If anything, they all seemed ecstatic to eat together as a community, quite different than what I expected. After all the meals were served, all the servers proceeded to clear the tables and package any leftover food for “takeout” meals. Along with this, we also passed out “breakfast bags” and sandwiches to the guests for them to take home. After my time volunteering last week, I sincerely can say I enjoyed the experience and if given the chance, would love to do it again.

Throughout March 2019, I continued with my tutoring sessions with Sophie and Charlotte on the weekends. We pored over many picture books every class. I paused from time to time to ask them questions about the characters, story events, and the pictures. Along with reading, we also did many interactive activities to assist them in furthering their English vocabulary, including a hands-on necklace task where they counted and strung necklaces with colorful beads and a language game where they learned and pieced together mini puzzles of fruits and vegetables. The following sessions I hope to help them progress so we can more freely communicate in English.

In our most recent Model UN meeting, we finished presenting our respective country’s position statements in front of the class. We each choose one of the three resolutions for the issue at hand (climate change), and split into groups based off of that.

Service Date & Time: 3/1/19 (1 hour tutoring); 3/6/19 (40 minutes Model UN Club Meeting); 3/8/19 (1 hour tutoring); 3/15/19 (50 minutes tutoring);  3/20/19 (1.5 hours PCCK).
