Murrieta AYLUS Lends a Hand to The Little Garden of Hope Project (15th) (6/3 + 6/04,2023)

Reported by Hsin Chen (Julie) Lu

On June 3rd & 4th, 2023, Murrieta AYLUS members lent a hand to the Little Garden of Hope Project. On the 3rd, the members made a visit to the garden to water the plants, as the watering system had yet to be fixed. The members manually watered each bed of vegetation with a hose, making sure to thoroughly soak the soil before moving on to the next bed. On the 4th, the members started off by pruning the tomato plants. Suckers, branches that grow in the “V” of a main branch and one stemming from it, need to be pruned so that the tomato plant can focus its energy on growing the fruits instead of the leaves. For suckers under 2 inches, you’re able to pinch them off, but pruners are needed for any of greater length. After pruning one tomato plant, the member made sure to clean the pruners before beginning to prune the next plant to make sure any diseases one plant may have isn’t spread to the others. After the members finished their task of pruning the tomato plants, they manually watered the beds, taking extra care to avoid getting water on the newly pruned tomato plants so that disease doesn’t develop. After finishing, the members cleaned themselves off and placed the tools they used back.
