East Cobb Branch Holds Summer Camp Session VII(7/19-7/25)

On July 19-25, Eileen from the East Cobb Branch participated in the Summer Camp Program and taught for one hour.

This program was initially started in summer of 2020 due to the cancellation of summer camps caused by COVID-19. AYLUS has decided to bring it back again this year. Its goal is to provide entertainment and teach different skills to children who may be bored at home or want to learn something new. The volunteer or volunteers may teach 1-on-1 or in groups no more than 5. By teaching these kids, we want to help them have fun and relieve some burden from their parents.

Activities that are offered include tennis, basketball, soccer, cooking, drawing, piano, violin, dancing, and more.

Eileen contributed by teaching three kids various types of dance.

My students ranged from 2nd grade to 4th grade, and I focused mainly on teaching ballet. However, other than ballet, I also taught Chinese Folk dance and K-pop. The classes were taught in my house in the basement, where I had a ballet setup (mirror and barre). I taught ballet variations from the nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty, and we did warmups for 10 minutes at the beginning of every class. Sometimes, it was difficult teaching more complex ballet moves, but I simplified it for my students by associating the movements with common daily movements and providing keywords for the students to memorize the moves. Not only did I talk to the students a lot to make them feel more comfortable with me, I also made sure to let the parents know what I was teaching and what we did in class. After a couple of classes, I hosted a mini concert for the parents and the children to show off what we had learned in class.
