May 2021 East Cobb Branch Youth Tutoring Report

In the month of May 2021, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held online youth tutoring activities, in light of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. All tutoring activities are one-on-one and use Skype, Zoom, Facetime, and similar methods to communicate.

We’ve changed our original tutoring program as libraries have closed due to the pandemic, and meeting students in person is no longer viable. As students need arguably more help during this period of school closures, we are giving kids in our area an opportunity to receive help. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.

This time, Faith Huang tutored two different students, one in first grade and one in 5th grade, for a total of 8 hours. With tutoring being online, Faith was able to teach the first grader, who lives in China, on English. Faith helped him with his pronunciation of English, his reading, and his writing. Faith also tried to think of a variety of interesting activities to keep the first grader engaged in her lessons, such as drawing a picture and describing it using English. The student really enjoys these activities. Faith tutored the 5th grader in piano by watching over the 5th grader’s practice every day and making sure the 5th grader was practicing well. This is very helpful to the 5th grader’s parents as they do not have to constantly check if their child is practicing or not. Faith really enjoys teaching and helping the students in any way, and the students enjoy it too.

Attendance: Faith Huang (8 hours); Sean Yan (4 hours); Saloni Jain (2 hours)
