Irvine Branch Kicks Off Summer Learning Experience with First Math Class on June 13, 2020

On June 13, 2020, volunteers from the Irvine Branch of AYLUS hosted the very first of seven math classes, otherwise known as the Summer Learning Experience. Participants in the class consisted of upper elementary school students and the class was conducted through the Zoom platform. We are proud to announce that 7 teachers and over 50 aspiring students came to our class!

Our curriculum is built on a mission to provide an engaging education that reveals the beauty of mathematics. This lesson revolved around the topic of linear equations, where students learned how to work with variables and understand important concepts like decimals, negative numbers, and equations. It served as an enrichment to the mathematics that they are taught in school. Next week, we will be continuing the Summer Learning Experience by teaching students inequalities.

For most of the class time, students were split into breakout rooms. We went through the main lecture and gave them a set of challenging problems to do, encouraging students to pitch in and volunteer to explain. Then, we reconvened to play a fun-filled Kahoot which combined both quick-wittedness and competitiveness. Lastly, teachers held a debrief to assess how the lesson went.

We hope to continue spreading the joy of math through our Summer Learning Experience!
