AYLUS San Diego Branch Members Volunteered at the San Diego Food Bank on July 9, 2018

Reported by Brian Zhu

On July 9, 2018, students from the San Diego Branch of AYLUS organized and participated in a volunteering event at the Jacob and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help package food to be distributed to the needy. The Jacob and Cushman San Diego Food Bank and the North County Food Bank chapter comprise the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 26 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 370,000 people per month in San Diego County. According to the Food Bank, about 80% of the work done in their warehouses comes from volunteer service. Without them, the Food Bank could not hope to accomplish what it has done these past few years.

The students spent 3 hours working diligently on the following tasks:

  • Checking carrots for rotten ones and disposing as necessary
  • Bagging the carrots for distribution

Although these tasks may seem simple, 3 straight hours of manual labor takes its toll on the body and the mind, not to mention the fact that each sack of carrots weighed over 50 pounds. As such, much appreciation for the boys, who displayed their strong work ethic and discipline.

In 3 hours of work, the students managed to bag around 2,900 pounds of carrots, which are now ready to be distributed to those who need it. That is a very impressive number, seeing as the morning shift on the same day also bagged around 2,000 pounds of carrots. We are very enthusiastic of what the students have accomplished and are excited to do more work in the future.

The following volunteers participated: Jonathan Backues, Luca Dobrin, Jeffrey Guo, Colin Huang, Andrew Peng, Claude Yan, Andrew Zhang, Alan Zhu, and Brian Zhu.

The AYLUS San Diego Committee organized the event at the San Diego Food Bank on July 9, 2018.
