The Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) sports committee continued chess classes every Monday and Tuesday for beginners along with Chess Tournaments on the first Saturday every month starting in October 2020.
During class, the students went over more challenging puzzles involving mate in 2s and even some mate in 3s. After class, there is always time to play games against each other to practice the skills we have learned in class in an actual game. Having learned a variety of skills, the students are improving their visualization, tactic, and position skills.
We continued with another class for beginners. It occurs every Tuesday from 7 to 8 pm. During class, we teach basic information needed to play a game of chess such as what we call the pieces, how they move, and to how to set up a chessboard. We reviewed forks and pins, giving positions but not telling which one it is and the students had to make the judgement on their own to solve it. After class, the students played games against each other via chess.com.
GPA will host the next Chess Tournament on February 6, 2020 from 2 to 3 pm EST.
Participants: Sarah Yan (1/11, 2 hrs; 1/12, 2 hrs; 1/18, 2 hrs; 1/19, 2 hrs), Erick Yan (1/11, 2 hrs; 1/12, 2 hrs; 1/18, 2 hrs; 1/19, 2 hrs).
