On Sunday, May 25th, Syosset AYLUS went to Jones Beach for the last time of the weekend for the airshow. The air show hosted by the U.S. Marines, Navy, and Airforce come to Jones beach every memorial day weekend to celebrate while featuring aircrafts such as the F22, F18, and F16. While the event is a great opportunity for families to come together and commemorate the ones that our nation has lost in battle, unfortunately, it also brings a lot of people to nesting spaces of endangered species. This was true for plovers, who just happen to nest on the beach during the months of summer through the early fall. Syosset AYLUS members came together to protect these blocked off spaces where plover nests were, and monitor the area in case anyone entered. Starting at 9AM, AYLUS Syosset and Roslyn came to the beach, grabbed vests, hats, and headed down the beach to cover different nesting sites. Everyone helped contribute to protecting these species until 3PM when the airshow ended, concluding a success day of protecting the plovers.
