East Cobb Branch Held Online Youth Tutoring Program II

From March 3, 2020, to March 26 the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held a Youth Tutoring activity online, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. All tutoring activities are one-on-one and use Skype or Zoom to communicate.

We’ve changed our original tutoring program as libraries have closed due to the pandemic, and meeting students in person is no longer available. As students especially elementary kids need more attention and time for help with school assignments during this period of school closures, we are giving kids our area an opportunity to receive such instructed academic help. With so many computer supportive features. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.

On March 24-26, 30, and 31, Gary Mei tutored a first-grade student over math and reading on Zoom. This time I considered the primary focus of the tutoring sessions was math, I used the whiteboard function and screen share (for IXL) to teach the student over the sessions. By helping the student understand and practice addition and subtraction, she understood the fundamental math concepts better.

Although the student was only in first grade, she was very attentive and quick to learn what I explained to her. By the end of the week, she was able to do three digital addition. The achievement was so rewarding to both her and me.
