On August 2nd, from 9am to 12pm, members of the AYLUS Dix Hills branch volunteered at the Planting Fields Arboretum to assist with mulching the dahlia flower beds. Volunteers transported mulch using wheelbarrows, then carefully spread it by hand and with buckets to ensure even coverage. In addition to mulching, they also removed any weeds they encountered. Because the task required attention to detail despite its small scale, the park organizer specifically requested the return of our branch, praising our consistent diligence and maturity demonstrated in past collaborations.
These efforts not only enhanced the visual appeal of the dahlia beds but also improved soil moisture retention and suppressed invasive weeds that could harm the surrounding flora. After completing the project, volunteers were invited to tour the Arboretum’s greenhouse, where they enjoyed a wide variety of rare and captivating plant species.
