On April 18th, members of Syosset AYLUS volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative(LINPI). During our visit, we worked under the guidance of Maggie, who assigned us several important tasks, which included cleaning out switchgrass seeds, sweeping the floor, transporting compost material, watering the plants, and loading up a truck full of plants to bring to an event the next day where plants such as asters, goldenrods, and cacti were being sold by the organization. The switchgrass seeds were cleaned by hand and then fed through a machine that refined them even further allowing for their use in planting. These tasks were needed to prepare the plants for the event on Saturday, the upkeep of the site, and the future planting of native plants. The Syosset AYLUS volunteers worked efficiently and finished all of the tasks needed that day, helping the Long Island Plant Initiative achieve its mission.
