AYLUS Roslyn Provides Food to Local Families through NOSH delivers! Food Pantry (45th) on December 31st, 2024

On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, the AYLUS Roslyn
Branch volunteered with NOSH Delivers. NOSH Delivers is a food pantry in Glen Cove that
strives to make sure families in need have access to food. As soon as we entered the
pantry,a few of us volunteers began assisting guests, as Tuesdays are the busiest days at
NOSH Delivers with the donations from various organizations. We offered different options
of produce and non-perishables to the customers so they would be able to put food on the
table in case they weren’t able to afford it or couldn’t leave their house to buy groceries.

While part of our group was pantry guiding, the other members were sorting through
hundreds of pounds of oranges that had rotted and molded or were going to soon, as the
next time we would give them out would be a few days later. We wanted to make sure that
the food that we give away is of the same quality that we would buy from a grocery store.
After we sorted through the produce,we got a donation of toiletries and checked to make
sure they weren’t opened, expired or if they were pharmaceutical items, as we legally
weren’t allowed to hand them out. The items we received were all returned items from
Target, so they weren’t in the best conditions to say the least. Most of the returned items
were not suitable to be distributed and had to be thrown out. This really made us more
conscious of the things we buy and return, and how many of them end up in landfills, or the
ocean. After that, we talked to Courtney, the founder and a board member of NOSH
Delivers who had many plans for future projects involving NOSH. A recent program that she
has started called Kid Food Independence Program (“KFIP”), has been a success so far as
it has increased the access to breakfast and lunch for children when school is not in
session. Our goal in 2025 is to expand the KFIP program so more children can benefit from
it.
