On Monday, December 30th, 2024, members of the Roslyn Aylus Branch participated in volunteering activities at the NOSH Delivers! Food pantry from 9 A.M to 12 P.M. This organization’s main mission is to provide food and essentials to the North Shore community, leaving a large impact on many.
As volunteers, we assisted the organization in many aspects, supporting their mission to fight food insecurity within the community. We were given a variety of opportunities and responsibilities including organizing and tidying up the facility, managing and organizing donations, and sorting through produce that would later be transferred and distributed to recipients. We additionally were also responsible for restocking items on shelves and were given the opportunity to prepare lunch and breakfast bags. The impact of our work is truly evident through each and every individual we aid during the process; from smiles to simple gestures of gratitude, it is truly uplifting to see the effect of our contributions.
One surprising occurrence during our shift was when we were tasked with organizing and sorting through a collection of bags necessary for the organization’s distribution of essentials. At first the task seemed simple and straightforward, until we realized how many we truly had to fold and store properly. However, we devised a plan that allowed the work to be completed effectively and efficiently.
Volunteering at NOSH requires skills that are necessary for effective collaboration and communication. Working with such an organization requires teamwork, organizational skills, the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment, etc. Volunteering has also required basic principles such as acting with integrity and compassion both towards members of the community and members of the organization.
Through this experience, we were able to see firsthand how food insecurity has impacted both individuals and a community as a whole. We are able to recognize and applaud organizations like NOSH for their dedication and commitment to combating this issue. Our volunteering has reminded us of the importance of giving back and inspiring others to do so as well. In the future we strive to promote this sense of kindness in our community, and hope to participate in similar efforts combating food insecurity.
