On Sunday, December 8th, 2024, the Aylus Great Neck Branch volunteered at Firefighter Park to support the second day of the annual Light and Ice Festival. This two-day event drew many families and children to enjoy the festivities. On Day 2, the Great Neck Park District offered complimentary face painting, balloon twisting, and cotton candy, attracting a large crowd.
As on the first day, our volunteers diligently assisted with various activities, including monitoring the ice skating rink, tending to the fire pits and igloos, and overseeing the inflatables to ensure family safety and enjoyment.
Since today was the last day of the festival, the activities ran from 12 PM to 4 PM. The Aylus Great Neck branch primarily focused on supervising the inflatable bouncy houses. Our responsibility was to ensure that only a safe number of children were allowed at a time to prevent overcrowding, which could lead to accidents. Each inflatable station was staffed by Aylus volunteers to ensure the children’s safety. Other tasks included monitoring the ice rink to prevent incidents and keeping the decorations intact. We also cleared fallen leaves from the cotton snow to maintain its pristine, white appearance for visitors.
As the Farmers Market extended its operating hours, some of our volunteers rotated between tasks after completing their assigned duties. This teamwork and collaboration between the two mission groups contributed to the overall success of the festival.
