From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 7, the Bellaire Branch of AYLUS volunteered at Books for Development (3709 Polk St, Houston, TX, 77003).
Books for Development is a non-profit organization that gathers donated books and uses volunteers to sort and ship them to libraries and schools in developing countries. First initiated in 2009 and established in 2013, Books for Development helps address the book famine existing in many developing countries.
Books for Development currently establishes and maintains libraries in Northwest Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Belize. The organization has built over 200 school libraries, several mobile libraries, and 25 community/district libraries, serving over 4 million residents. Books for Development also makes local book deliveries to the homeless, schools, jails, Spanish speaking children, and disadvantaged children during the holidays.
AYLUS volunteers helped sort books by genre and packaged books into boxes for shipment at the Books for Development warehouse.
11 volunteers participated in this event (3 hours): Alexander Tang, Alan Du, Raymond Han, Shreyas Sinha, Yuruo Shen, Yimeng Sun, Danica Du, Zoey Dou, Victoria Wang, Isabel Li, and Zachary Xiao.
