Day 5 of the CRAB Biology Summer Camp occurred on Friday, 8/28/26. This lecture covered many topics in evolution, ecology, and body systems. Teacher Isabelle Yang started off by covering evolution, including natural selection, evidence for evolution, the mechanisms by which evolution can occur, and speciation. Teacher Zoe Li covered ecology which contained topics on energy pyramids, food webs, biogeochemical cycles, and human impacts on the ecosystem. Body systems were taught by both teachers. Isabelle covered the integumentary, muscle, skeletal, and male reproductive systems while Zoe covered the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, immune, lymph, endocrine, urinary, and female reproductive systems. The CRAB team received heartfelt messages from the students since this was the last class of this biology camp.
The lecture was 112 slides and ended late because lots of information was covered in this class. Some students stayed for the full class. The class once again concluded with a Quizizz game with 3 participating students since the game went into overtime. 9 students attended the lecture, and there were 7 participating students.
The anonymous feedback form for day 5 was very positive. 83.3% of students said the lecture pace was just right, and 16.7% of students said the lecture pace was too fast. 100% of students said the teachers’ voices were clear. 60% reported that they could answer the questions and just the right amount of time was given, 20% said too much time was given, and 20% said not enough time was given for the questions. Additionally, 83.3% of people who responded to the form said just the right amount of information was provided on the sides, but 16.7% said the slides were presented in a confusing order.
The feedback form for lesson 5 was also a feedback form for the entire course. 66% of students replied that the information from the class over the 5 days was helpful, while 33% of students said that at least some of it was. We also learned more about student motivations for taking our course, with one student stating that they took it because they wanted to join the Science Olympiad team at their school. Isabelle and Zoe were particularly moved by this, as both teachers had had experience as a member of Science Olympiad before. Students rated the overall CRAB learning experience an average of 4.5 stars, and all students answered that they would recommend the course to others in the future. Other student comments include that the class was clear and understandable, and that the games were very fun.
In total, both Teacher Isabelle Yang and Teacher Zoe Li agree that the camp was an overall positive and successful experience. Both teachers gained better skills at presenting, lecture-creating, teaching, and learning how to manage and create their own community events.
After the course, 6 students who were especially diligent in attendance and participation were eligible for the $15 gift card, including Chloe, Ethan, Faye, Julie, Phoebe and Tammy. We met students Ethan, Julie and Tammy on 8/30/26, where we handed them their gift cards, certificates and some candy. Other students who could not come in person received their gift cards and certificates digitally by email.
We loved teaching this course since many great students participated and put forth their effort. We hope anyone who is interested continues pursuing biology in the future!
