On August 15, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Newtown AYLUS members volunteered at the Mill Dam parking lot in Tyler State Park. We partnered with Tyler State Park to remove weeds surrounding caged trees near the main entrance to a park trail. This work helped improve the appearance of the area while supporting the healthy growth of newly planted trees.
During the event, we went around the caged trees and pulled out weeds that were competing with the trees for nutrients and blocking sunlight. Many of the weeds had grown inside the protective cages, which made them difficult to reach and remove. To overcome this challenge, we worked as a team: one person held the cage open while another entered the cage to pull out the weeds. Through cooperation and communication, we were able to efficiently clear the areas surrounding the trees.
This work had both environmental and aesthetic impacts. Removing the weeds allows the trees to receive more nutrients and sunlight, helping them remain healthy and continue growing. Healthy trees also contribute to the ecosystem by producing oxygen and providing natural cover and habitat for animals. Additionally, clearing the weeds made the main entrance to the trail more attractive and aesthetically pleasing for visitors.
Through this experience, we learned more about the different needs of trees as they grow and how weeds can develop around them and compete for essential resources. We also learned the importance of teamwork when completing environmental service projects. We hope to continue collaborating with Tyler State Park in the future to help beautify the park and protect our local environment.
