Saturday, August 1, from 1 pm to 4 pm, three AYLUS Roslyn members volunteered at Nassau’s Seaford residential home.
All volunteers were incredibly attentive towards the residents while participating in group activities that were personally catered to them. The first activity was baking a cake for the residents to enjoy. We prepared our ingredients in a bowl and allowed each resident to mix and stir the ingredients thoroughly. We made sure that all residents and volunteers wore gloves while preparing the cake
We set the cake aside in a preheated oven to bake. The volunteers prepped for the second activity: making bracelets for the residents. All residents’ bracelets were specially designed for their wrist size and their personal favorite colors and patterns.
While they admired their bracelets, we prepared for the third activity, which involved sheets of paper and markers that were given to the residents in order for them to draw or trace pictures with as many colors as they liked. There were multi-color sheets of paper and colors that they enjoyed drawing with.
Then there were the jigsaw puzzles, where each volunteer was designated to a resident, and we coordinated the residents into piecing the puzzles together correctly as we aided them by giving them little hints.
After the puzzle, we dished out the baked cake that we prepared earlier to the residents; none of them had any allergies to eggs, but one needed the cake as a puree, which now leads us to our final activity. The final activity that we got to play with the residents before we departed was bingo; each resident was given a bingo sheet, and one of them even got the chance to say out the numbers while we played.
That concludes our time with the residents. All of the volunteers had a wonderful time spending the afternoon with the residents, and we hope to return in the near future!
