On Tuesday, July 28th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Roslyn Branch volunteered at the NOSH Food Pantry. NOSH Delivers! is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 to bring food to families harmed by the pandemic. Now, it still provides food to families who struggle with food insecurity. Every week, they deliver NOSH bags that contain groceries to many families in need. In addition, families are now able to go to the NOSH Food Pantry located in Glen Cove in order to pick up their groceries.
Upon arrival, we welcomed customers, began breaking down spare cardboard boxes, brought the flattened boxes outside, and filled KFIP bags with lunch for children. We used a shopping cart to transport the bags onto the shelves. The bags contained a pack of ramen and a snack, such as chips or cookies. The bags also had designs, positive messages, and affirmations by volunteers in order to brighten up the children’s days. After the shelves were fully stocked, we worked on transferring vegetables into individual plastic bags and swept the floors to maintain cleanliness. Shortly after, we sorted a pile of snacks. If the Best By date was less than two months from now, then they were unusable. Then, we continued to fill more KFIP bags for the rest of the shift.
