On Wednesday July 29th, members from the Roslyn AYLUS branch collaborated in the Bryant Library to create cards for senior citizens and decorate NOSH bags. Today was the fifth arts and crafts workshop but the first time decorating KFIP bags and making cards.
When we arrived at the library we made our way into the childrens room and began setting up the materials for the decorating. We laid out materials such as stickers, markers and colored pencils on two tables. The volunteers grabbed brown paper bags and drew designs on them like animals, patterns and shapes so the children who looked at them could feel happy looking at colorful drawings. These bags are used for KFIP bags which is a youth program at NOSH Delivers which provides free breakfast and lunch bags for children. Because schools are not open during the summer it is harder for low-income families to have access to food. This makes these bags much more needed which is why we have made many extra today.
While some volunteers made KFIP bags, some other volunteers made cards for seniors citizens. We wrote positive messages and decorated the back to bring joy to the elderly in senior homes. Finally at the end we cleaned up the materials and counted how many cards and bags we had decorated. We wrote over 15 cards and decorated about 80 bags in the span of two hours. Today was an extremely successful day because of it being our first time and how many well decorated bags and cards we made. This activity made us realize that even a small act like writing and drawing on a card can lighten up a senior citizen or bring joy to a child. We hope to make this event reoccurring and to have lots of volunteers join us next time!
