On Friday, July 3, 2026, volunteers from AYLUS Oyster Bay went to Jones Beach for another day of protecting the endangered Piping Plovers. As one of New York’s most carefully protected bird species, Piping Plovers rely on volunteers to help safeguard their nesting areas, especially in heavily visited public spaces.

Each year, Jones Beach hosts its annual air show around Independence Day, attracting thousands of visitors. With so many families enjoying the beach, stray balls, kites, and other activities can unintentionally threaten the protected nesting sites. Volunteers from AYLUS Oyster Bay, along with members from the other AYLUS branches, returned to monitor the fenced-off nesting areas, ensuring that visitors stayed a safe distance away and helping protect the birds throughout the event.

Thanks to their efforts, families were able to enjoy the spectacular air show while the Piping Plovers and their nests remained safe.
