On Saturday, May 30th, from 2:00-8:00 PM, the Rosyln Branch volunteered at Smash
Hunger at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park,
Flushing, New York. Smash Hunger is a community fundraising event that supports local food
pantries through tennis tournaments, food donations, cultural performances, and family
activities. Funds raised through tennis tournament registration fees were donated to local food
pantries to help address food insecurity in the community.
Throughout the event, we assisted organizers with supporting the tennis tournament and
ensuring activities ran smoothly. As volunteers, we helped create a positive experience for
participants and spectators while contributing to an event dedicated to helping those in need.
The tournament attracted players and family from the community, demonstrating how sports can
be used to bring people together for a meaningful cause.
One challenge of volunteering at a large event was remaining attentive and prepared to
assist whenever needed. Effective communication and teamwork were important in helping
organizers manage the tournament and coordinate activities throughout the day. By working
together, volunteers helped maintain an organized environment for players and attendees.
Through this experience, we learned more about the issue of food insecurity and the
importance of community involvement. Seeing participants support the event through
tournament registration and attendance showed how collective efforts can make a positive
impact. We hope to continue participating in service opportunities that strengthen our
community and support important causes in the future.
Members who participated include: Wesley Qu (4 hours), Connie Lin (3 hours), Elena Lin (3
hours), Olivia Lin (3 hours), Katelyn Chu (3 hours), Kayla Chu (6 hours), Leo Zheng (3 hours),
Michael Zhang (3 hours)
