SMILE Pearland is a youth-led inclusive program dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs and their families through engaging, skill-building activities in a welcoming and supportive environment. The program is part of the Youth SMILE 4 Special Needs initiative, organized by Hummingbird Community Outreach, PROMIS/AYLUS Pearland, and valued community partners.
Our May session, themed “Rhythm & Movement Fun,” featured a hands-on bucket drumming music activity. The event began with an energetic freeze dance led by volunteers, followed by a discussion about how music can bring happiness and connection. Participants shared their favorite songs and talked about how music makes them feel.
Participants were then guided through a lively bucket drumming activity, using drumsticks and buckets to practice beats and rhythm exercises. With the encouragement and support of volunteers, participants created an energetic and joyful musical experience together.
The session concluded with a bright and cheerful dance celebration.
These interactive music activities encouraged participants to develop rhythm, coordination, listening, and teamwork skills while improving attention, motor planning, and self-expression. Through movement and drumming exercises, participants were able to build confidence, engage socially with peers and volunteers, and enjoy a positive and inclusive learning experience.
