On Sunday, May 17th, 2026, 8:45am to 12:15pm, AYLUS Oakland Gardens members went to Playground 146 CXLVI to beautify it. It’s 226th event. Playground 146 was created around 1944 to 1947. It got its name from the street it was built on, 146th street. Our members visited this wonderful place to clean it up and repaint it.
Half of our members used paint brushes of various sizes and paint rollers to paint the 21 benches and 4 picnic tables. The paint they used was “Central Park Green,” given to us by the NYC Parks Department. To make sure none of the paint got onto the ground, our members spread trash bags under the objects being painted. The bags would catch the falling droplets and prevent it from sticking to the ground. In order to make sure no one sat on the wet paint, our members stuck “Wet Paint” signs on the benches and tables until they were done. By the time they were finished, they had used up all 5 gallons of paint.
The other half of our members had picked up garbage grabbers and trash bags to pick up litter around the park. An area close to the park was the “Kissena Corridor Park Trail,” which was an important bird habitat. Our members reported seeing blue jays and lizards there. As a result, our members focused on that area to make sure the wildlife was safe. Our members had found a wide variety of objects, including but not limited to: bottle caps, plastic scraps, car seats, food containers, cabinets, and scooters. By removing these objects, they left the park and the trail a better place, keeping it safe for humans and animals alike.
